The International Carpet Festival successfully concludes in Icherisheher.
The International Carpet Festival, organized by the “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve Administration and “Azerkhalcha” OJSC, with the support of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Agency – AZPROMO, has successfully concluded. The main goal of the festival was to promote Azerbaijani carpet art on a global scale, showcase its rich heritage and future development prospects, and benefit from the experience and skills of international carpet experts.
According to “Azerkhalcha” OJSC, the festival began with the International Carpet Forum and continued for two days through the historic streets of Icherisheher.
With participants from countries such as Russia, Turkiye, Latvia, Iran, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Georgia, the International Carpet Festival successfully displayed the beauty, uniqueness, and richness of Azerbaijani carpets. Over 400 carpets from “Azerkhalcha” OJSC were used solely to decorate Icherisheher, and thousands of people attended the festival over the two days.
In addition to the main organizers, several official partners also participated in this grand event. “Baku City Circuit,” “Baku Steel Company,” “Kontakt,” and “Ganja Automobile Plant” contributed to the festival with stands that matched the overall concept, adding vibrancy to the event.
At the “Baku City Circuit” stand, the original Formula 1 car on display represented a successful synthesis of the rich traditions of Azerbaijani carpet art with modern technology and the dynamics of motorsports. The patterns on the car showcased the ancient heritage of carpet weaving in a creative, modern format, transforming it into a unique visual expression of national culture. The ornaments used were based on motifs found in “Khan Karabakh”-style carpets—simple yet profound symbols representing the Sun, Motion, Eternity, and Grandeur. Their dynamic, spinning structures visually emphasized the car’s speed and power, creating a powerful image of harmony between art and technology. This design was also used as part of the official decor for the 2024 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Additionally, a DJ entertained the crowd near the Formula 1 stand, and children had the chance to drive simulators of the Baku track, experiencing the thrill of being real Formula 1 drivers.
One of the festival’s sponsors, the “Kontakt” retail chain, added color to the event with an intriguing stand. The stand featured vacuum cleaners hand-decorated with traditional national patterns by artists. Throughout the festival, various carpet-themed games were also organized, with prizes awarded to participants.
One of the most popular attractions for visitors of all ages was the tractor presented by the “Ganja Automobile Plant” and decorated with national carpet ornaments by the creative team at “Azerkhalcha” OJSC.
The tractor was adorned with patterns from “Butali Ganja” and “Chiragli Ganja” carpets. The “buta” element in “Butali Ganja” carpet is one of the most widespread motifs in Eastern and Azerbaijani carpet art. “Buta” symbolizes a wide range of objects and patterns, representing both living and non-living aspects of nature, including humans, animals, plants, and more. The “hooked” element found in “Chiragli” carpet is an ancient Turkic symbol of the sky, earth, nature, abundance, and prosperity.
“Baku Steel Company” was represented at the festival with three compositions reflecting the fusion of Azerbaijani carpet traditions and modern metal art. These included “A Sapling for My Roots” by Turkish sculptor Nilhan Sesalan, created as part of the “Baku Steel Art 2024” international symposium, “Iron Heritage” by Azerbaijani sculptor Mushfig Heydarov, and “Witness of Two Lives” – a special piece crafted for the festival by local sculptor Jala Aliyeva.
