bp's contribution to the 150th anniversary of the Azerbaijani national press

bp has supported another important cultural heritage project as part of its social investment activities in Azerbaijan.

Within the framework of the project, bp has financed the printing of a transliterated version of all issues of the influential publication “Dirilik” magazine, which played a significant role in shaping the intellectual and literary life of Azerbaijan in the early 20th century.

Overall, the project aims to ensure that the original texts of “Dirilik” magazine are accessible to today’s readers, researchers and future generations by transliterating them from the old alphabet (Arabic) into the modern alphabet of the Azerbaijani language.

This initiative is part of bp’s commitment to promoting the rich cultural heritage and history of Azerbaijan and once again emphasizes the company’s long-term partnership with the country and its people.

“We are very pleased to finance this publication, as it is an important contribution to the preservation and promotion of Azerbaijan’s cultural and intellectual heritage. We are proud to support efforts aimed at reviving these historical texts for modern readers.

The first issue of the magazine featured an editorial entitled “Our Goals,” in which Editor-in-Chief Aliabbas Muznib called on readers to learn from history and to embrace both physical and spiritual vitality through national self-awareness and enlightenment. The magazine’s motto, “The word of the press should be the word of the century,” reflected its enlightening and inspiring mission. We hope that by supporting the transliteration of brilliant examples of Azerbaijan’s early press, we are contributing to the 150th anniversary of the national press of Azerbaijan, which continues this mission with pride,” said Bakhtiyar Aslanbeyli, bp's Vice President for the Caspian Region.

Initially published in 1914–1916, the magazine “Dirilik” was characterized by the Azerbaijani publicist, writer and political figure Mirza Bala Mahammadzadeh as “the literary, social and political magazine of the Turkic world”. The magazine published articles on social and political events, literature, culture and history, and paid special attention to the promotion of national unity, cultural progress and national identity.

The magazine “Dirilik” published the works of Mahammad Amin Rasulzadeh, Ismayil bey Gaspirali, Jafar Jabbarli, Aliaga Vahid and other well-known Azerbaijani intellectuals, writers and poets. This magazine is known as one of the most important literary and ideological centers of its time.

The project was implemented by the “Milli irs” cultural and historical research fund.

bp allocated 25 thousand manats ($14 thousand 700) to cover the publication costs of this collection.
