"Media Cup - 2026" mini-football tournament kicks off in Gusar

Ahead of Azerbaijan's National Press Day, a mini-football tournament for journalists has kicked off in the city of Gusar.

The tournament is being held at the Gusar Olympic Sports Complex. It is organized by Yurd.Media and the Sports Research Center, with Avrora Group serving as the title sponsor. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Gusar District Executive Authority, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, members of martyrs' families, and prominent public figures.

Elshan Mammadov, Chairman of the Sports Research Center, explained the tournament format, noting that the participating teams have been named after historic Azerbaijani newspapers, including "Akinchi," "Ziya," "Taraqqi," and "Hayat."

The ceremony continued with a one-minute moment of silence in memory of Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people, those who lost their lives defending the country's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, as well as deceased media professionals. The National Anthem of Azerbaijan was then performed.

Murad Aliyev, Editor-in-Chief of Yurd.Media, stated that the tournament brings together representatives of print and online media, as well as television channels, from both the capital and the regions. He emphasized that such competitions help strengthen solidarity among media professionals.

Emil Amirmatov, Head of the Gusar District Sector of the Quba-Khachmaz Regional Youth and Sports Department, highlighted the importance of organizing tournaments for journalists and wished all participants success.

Following the speeches, members of martyrs' families attending the event were presented with certificates of honor and gifts from the title sponsor, Avrora Group.

The tournament then officially got underway.

In the opening match, Akinchi, a team made up of journalists from socio-political news websites, defeated Ziya, a team of news agency journalists, by 5–3.

In the second match, Hayat, consisting of television journalists, faced Taraqqi, made up of sports journalists. Taraqqi won the match 3–2.

As a result, Akinchi will face Taraqqi in the final on July 19, while Ziya and Hayat will compete for third place.

The tournament champions will receive a championship trophy, the top three teams will be awarded medals, and all participants will receive certificates of honor.
