“Lankaran” is looking for a sponsor: “If financial support cannot be found…”
The “Lankaran” team, which has been competing in the Regional League for three years, is on the verge of disbanding.
Club president Rahman Abbasov said this in a statement. He said that the club is struggling due to a lack of sponsorship and that it will have to disband if financial support cannot be found:
“I am the head of the club, but if we cannot find a sponsor, we will stop competing in the Regional League. We have been playing for three years using our own resources. I cover the team’s financial needs with my personal funds. None of the footballers or staff here receive a salary. They all work and play voluntarily. It is true that the players are still willing to play, but financial difficulties make this impossible.
I have approached the branches of major companies based in Lankaran, as well as other organizations and individuals within my reach, seeking sponsorship. We have competed as one team for three years. The footballers have received neither salaries nor bonuses. They have dedicated their days off to the team.
We created the team because there was no football in Lankaran. We have taken successful steps and reached the quarter-finals of the Regional League for two consecutive years. Last season, of the eight clubs competing at this stage, “Lankaran” was the only one without a sponsor. All the other clubs had made it this far with financial support from sponsors.
I am not a businessman and I do not have a business. I am a former police officer and a veteran of the First Karabakh War. Everywhere we go, people ask us when Lankaran will have a club playing in the top division. But today, we do not have the financial means to compete even in the Regional League.
We have time until September 17. If we cannot find a sponsor, the only football club in this district will also disband.”
