A new project of BSU - "Ecospace" at the university
"Ekospace" (“Ekoməkan”) was opened at Baku State University (BSU) on November 14.
"Ekospace" created on an area of approximately 1000 square meters on the territory of BSU brings together modern technologies and ecological solutions with a special approach.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, BSU rector Elchin Babayev said that the university has signed a new pilot project within COP29, which is an important contribution to the fight against global climate change. The Rector said that "Ekospace" has several important features.
It has been brought to attention that the Aquaponic system created in the space is one of the modern agricultural technologies. This demonstrates the possibility of achieving high productivity in laboratory conditions with the water recirculation method (using less water). The cyclical system, which combines crop and fish farming with innovative methods, includes a sustainable agricultural approach.
The microalgae bioreactor installed in "Ekospace" ensures the extraction of oxygen from carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and enables monitoring of the process of biomass formation in laboratory conditions, which can be used for various purposes such as biofuel, animal feed, biological products, etc.
It was noted that photovoltaic converters ("solar panels") are used in this space to ensure energy efficiency and build renewable energy infrastructure.
A digital eco-information system has been installed in "Ekospace" for the purpose of digitally receiving and analyzing environmental data and sharing research results on digital platforms.
"AQMesh" digital air quality monitoring system in the space determines the amount of different gases in the atmosphere by means of different types of sensors, and allows monitoring the level of atmospheric pollution in real time.
"Davis Vantage Pro2" - a digital weather information system allows to measure parameters such as wind speed and direction, wind cooling and heating index, temperature, humidity, pressure and dew point, and share them on a special screen and through mobile applications.
In "Ekospace", which will operate under the Student Scientific and Technical Creativity Center of BSU, extensive public education on environmental protection will be carried out, and the social activities of BSU will be further strengthened. Plants presented by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources were planted in the green areas of the place.
It was emphasized that "Ekospace" will operate according to the UN Sustainable Development Goals of quality education, sustainable cities and communities, combating climate change, protection of terrestrial ecosystems, and partnership.
Within the framework of the project, BSU intends to cooperate closely with both local and international environmental organizations. Thanks to this cooperation, a foundation will be created for bringing advanced practices in environmental protection to Azerbaijan and for international recognition of the activities of local environmental organizations. It is planned to involve students in local and international environmental activities on the basis of volunteering programs to be organized.
It should be noted that "Ekospace" was created within the framework of public-private partnership with BSU and "Bayramli Group", as well as with "LU-MUN Holding" and "Azecolab" companies. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has given special support to the project.
